Is This Really Happening?

Overwhelmed. I can’t think of another way to describe what I was feeling and experiencing when I was lucky enough to witness this one. It was a magical experience, and it certainly was a sunrise with all the feels; I remember standing on the dock at my favorite location repeatedly saying, “Wow,” as I tried to steady my hands and tripod to capture such beauty.

Once again, my fellow early risers were as awed as myself. The result was complete silence as we stood with mouths agape, afraid talking would disturb such an incredible sunrise with all the feels.

But this sunrise with all the feels didn’t appear as such immediately. It slowly evolved over a two-hour time span, which began before dawn. As is evidenced by the photos, it required two of my favorite elements: clouds and water. But it also needed another: patience.

Photography Tip #3

Bring a strong cup of coffee and be patient! It was not my most redeeming quality (and perhaps not yours, but the coffee sure helps), but I learned to develop much more as I became proficient in photographing sunrises that give you all the feels! Clouds may not be present when you begin shooting, or there may be too many. As you look at the second photo, it is pretty cloudy when this sunrise starts to evolve. But with time, the sun gives the illusion of pushing the clouds away, bursting forth to add stunning orange and pink to contrast with the gray.

Quote of the Day

When a sunrise steals your breath, say nothing. Just close your eyes and think about the sunrise with all the feels.
