This must sound like a very morbid blog, but it is gorgeous in a unique and haunting way. There is a state park in Florida called Big Talbot Island. A beautiful destination along the ocean, it is located just west of Jacksonville. Along a stretch of beach within the park are giant, dead trees that have succumbed to the tides of time. Known as the place where the trees go to die, this remarkable destination should be on everyone’s list of places to visit.
On the day we were there, hikers like ourselves and parents and children enjoyed the scenery. The fallen trees have created a natural playground for the kids. With plenty of opportunities for climbing or playing a game of hide-and-seek, hours of fun await for the little ones or just the kids at heart!
Trees once firmly rooted in the ground have been subjected to intense storms and the passage of time. Fierce wind and years of beach erosion have exposed the elaborate root system and created a graveyard where the trees go to die along the shore. Coupled with the blinding Florida sun, they have become bleached to a pristine white, blending in with the nearly white sand along the beach.
But the rest of the park is in sharp contrast to this location. It is filled with lush green forests, and the wildlife abounds within its shelter. So if a hike along the beach isn’t for you, don’t worry! There are many other options inland.
I have lived in Florida for nearly thirty-five years, but this was my first visit to this haunting paradise. Its diversity left a lasting impression, and I look forward to returning to where the trees go to die. This park is a true gem in Florida.
