Discoveries Along the Way
My husband and I were fortunate to experience a cross-country road trip from Florida to Banff, Canada, a few years ago. The discoveries and memories we made along the way were unforgettable. Perhaps one of the things that struck me the most was the sheer beauty we encountered along the highways, so much so that frequent stops were in order. Along the way, we found some unexpected favorites.
We had read about some places, with fellow travelers sharing stories of how gorgeous they were. But I always doubted that they could be as incredible as they shared until I saw it myself. It was then that I realized they were all true. The sky is as blue as turquoise, and the green is as deep as an emerald pool. Anytime there was a contrasting color, it stood out so vividly that it was still hard to believe it was real, even though I was looking right at it! These places quickly became unexpected favorites during our travels.
So, as I traveled down memory lane to reacquaint myself with the trip, I found some more of my unexpected favorites.
A Photo’s Story
Featured Photo
On our return trip through Montana, we encountered this stunning wild mustard field. The stark yellow was so beautiful against the blue and white sky, as though painted by an artist. Unexpected favorites like this made our journey so memorable.
Spearfish Canyon
Ranked as one of the most scenic drives in the United States, it lives up to the hype. Beautiful mountains tower above you on both sides of the road, with lush green forests, occasional wildlife, and a waterfall. We discovered this incredible waterfall at the end of a short hike from the hotel where we stayed for the night. Recent rainfall ensured it was flowing freely amongst the lush, green landscape. I went there very early in the morning, so I alone had the route to watch the sunrise. This sight quickly became an unexpected favorite!
Big Horn Canyon
As we made our way across Montana, we decided to stop and admire the beautiful view. As we walked around, I came upon a field with these stunning flowers, Lupin. The area was covered with them, perfectly contrasting the turquoise sky and emerald-green landscapes. This spot was another one of those unexpected favorites on our trip.
Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Canada
Although not along the roadside, this photo is an unexpected favorite. While we were waiting in line to paddle down the lake, these bright red canoes were docked along the shore as though waiting to be photographed!
