Back Down at the Water’s Edge
One last time, we’re back at the water’s edge to conclude our series on the American alligator. And one thing that always captures my attention is the impressive size of the mature adults. Depending on the location and available food source, these fascinating creatures can become very large and heavy.
A Close Encounter
On one occasion, while hiking along the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, several alligators were sunning themselves along the path. This presented somewhat of a dilemma, as I hesitated to pass them, unsure of their reaction to my presence. So, I found a safe location and waited for them to move independently or in the presence of a passing vehicle. My wait was brief, which I welcomed because I was surrounded by alligators in every direction, with one being at least 11 feet in length! When the truck came close to two of them, they were startled and quickly headed towards the water. The speed at which they moved was incredible.
Once the path was clear, I continued hiking. However, before I could reach the location where the two had been on the path, they were already making their way back to their favorite spot! It was unnerving, to be sure, but the result was an opportunity to witness their impressive size and speed and capture some great shots!
