Modern-Day Dinosaurs

For those lucky enough (I’ll explain in a minute) to encounter the American Alligator, it is an experience you will never forget. 

Often referred to as modern-day dinosaurs, that is actually true! According to the Florida Wildlife Commission, “The most recent evidence indicates that crocodilians (which includes alligators) and dinosaurs evolved from a common ancestor that existed subsequent to the common ancestor that they share with other reptiles. So, even though alligators are classified as reptiles along with lizards, snakes, and turtles, they are actually more closely related to birds, whose direct ancestors were dinosaurs!”

I find them fascinating creatures and one of my favorite members of the animal kingdom to photograph. Their behavior can change instantly from a sleepy reptile enjoying the sun to a vicious predator. If provoked, you will quickly witness their incredible speed and agility—perhaps one of their most memorable qualities. Their size makes it difficult to believe unless you see it in person. 

You Are Their Guest

When I began photographing the American Alligator, it was with trepidation and even fear. While I still proceed with extreme caution, once you understand them, you can (with a long lens) get close enough to capture some fantastic shots. The key is to realize you are the visitor in their “house” and must treat them with the respect they deserve. 

I’ve read many articles and taken classes with some of the best wildlife photographers in the world. They all agree that you need to research your subject before going on a photo shoot, understand their behavior, know when and when not to approach them, etc. This advice is very applicable when photographing alligators.
