Everything is in Balance

The serene beauty of the sunrise over water truly captivates the viewer. And in this shot color abounds, from deep blues to bright yellow and just a hint of mauve. But what sets this one apart is how the cloud formations appear to meet right above the water, thus its name, “Meet You at the Water.” A lone duck appears in the corner, bringing perfect balance.

I included this photo in the Leading Lines series for two reasons. 

• The clouds draw your eye right to the top of the water.
• They also open up and give you a second focal point, the duck in the corner.

Worth the Effort

I shared my ten practical tips for photographing a sunrise in a previous post. I talk a lot about having the right mix of clear and cloudy skies in it. This photo reaffirms how that combination can work in concert with amazing results. Had I not experienced this previously, it would have been easy just to hit the snooze button and roll over in bed on such a cloudy morning. But fortunately, I made the effort and was rewarded accordingly. 

Patience Rewarded

This shot also illustrates how patience is a virtue in photography! The duck’s appearance, the clouds dipping down towards the water, their reflection, and a brief opening of clear, colorful skies created the “sweet spot” for capturing a beautiful image of sunrise over water. All the right ingredients were present to witness one of nature’s most incredible shows.
