From Canton, Ohio our next stop took us along the first and oldest major highway in America, the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Winding through the hills and farmlands, we made our way to Hickory Bridge Farm Restaurant-Bed and Breakfast. A short drive to historic Gettysburg, this quaint bed and breakfast is a wonderful location to unwind and enjoy the quiet and relaxation after a day on the road.

Proprietor Mary Lynn Martin couldn’t be any nicer when she welcomes you to her home, that for the duration of your stay becomes your home. Our weekday visit meant we had the entire farmhouse on the property all to our selves! That included enjoying a refreshing glass of iced tea while sitting in the rocking chairs on the front porch. And after dinner, a glass of wine on the balcony overlooking the covered bridge. There we were treated to the sounds of the birds and babbling brook that runs through the center of the property. And the sunset was pretty spectacular too!

Open Friday-Saturday and Sunday Brunch, there is a restaurant on site serving delicious home-style meals, and the Country Store where you can find treasures of days gone by. 

At her recommendation (which proved to be a good one) we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Dobbin House in Gettysburg, which is steeped in our nation’s history. On our return to the inn, we encountered a herd of deer “dining” in a wheat field amongst the rolling hills. Also passing a beautiful sunflower field, as you can see it was a photographer’s dream!

The next morning we were served a yummy breakfast on the patio overlooking the brook, while listening to its sounds and getting a surprise visit from an adorable hummingbird. 

So if your travels are taking you on a trip to retrace the history of America, this delightful inn is the perfect destination on your way to and/or from Gettysburg, and an opportunity to appreciate the beauty that is the farmlands and orchards of Pennsylvania. 

And so it continues…until our next stop!
